Live Poinsettias

Boxing Day Taiwan My first Christmas without both my son and my daughter I fled to the mountains. On my way home, and I handed in the films for development. The camera shop guy was glued to the television. He mumbled and pointed to the counter. I thought he was rather rude. Until I realised what he was staring at. Tsunami Count not what is lost, but what is left.

Christmas preparations

Mandy informs me that I have a few Agapanthus in bloom in my own garden in George! I'm so happy that despite my absence our gardens are in sync and getting ready for Christmas. Our neighbour across the river has had a tragic death in her family, but has once again generously offered her magnificent hydrangeas for picking on Christmas morning. A Panettone has surreptitiously found its way to Mandy's kitchen, (thanks Malcolm!), and I do believe the JC is already chilling.   The hydrangeas and agapanthus (agapanthi, Casper?) are in bloom.     We will be together on Christmas morning, across the universe, from Hong Kong to George. Above, our spot between the pond and the river. Below, Ava's garden, Mandy's granddaughter. I think this spot should be chosen this Christmas. It's closer to my house, too.   Wish We Were There.

Cool marketing. The sliding doors of the MTR double up as fridge doors in the supermarket. Juice from the Cape!

The Last and the First

The last day of November was so clear,  I could see the foothills in the Free State  from the beach in Repulse Bay, here in Hong Kong. 30 November 2011 30 degrees Ferdinand's 30th birthday A truly Wish You Were Here moment. On the first day of December, my true love gave to me, a cold dreary sunless grey day.... 1 December 2011 18 Degrees Christmas Tree Time. REAL Douglas Firs.   What a sensation to SMELL them, touch them, drink in their greenness. Took me back to my childhood in a powerful way. I took the scenic Park route back, and for the life of me cannot see the connection between Christmas and Locusts. grilllllllllllll  ek hou nie van sprinkane nie Then, of course, there are the Asian-inspired decorations: Tomorrow, I promise, I will show you the angels in the mall.

More Christmas Windows

We are enjoying the very last days of autumn. And they are indeed splendid. Juliet and I deem ourselves lucky to not be at work, and rushed to IFC rooftop, (well, not really the ROOF) to enjoy the last remains of the day. While the rest of Hong Kong is shopping till they are dropping... The newly-opened Harvey Nichols store in Pacific Place is doing their dirty laundry in public: Tomorrow, I will show you the angels in the mall.
